Graphic design as a Crisis

Brief
To create a publication that would serve as a compendium of two types of content: All the studio projects that I worked on in a semester, and the design research essays I had written over that semester.

There was complete creative control over the look, structure, material and binding of this publication. The only pre-decided element was the content.

Idea
This was the final studio project of the first year of my MFA, before we started on thesis work in the second year.

At this point, I was in the middle of a proper Creative Crisis

Instead of creating one publication that contained both collections, I decided to create two books that spoke to each other; CREATIVE + CRISIS.

CREATIVE= looking through my works this semester thinking “i could do it better now”
CRISIS= an attempt at reminding myself why I love design and  some works that inspire me

(Looking at all your work reminds you of your own creative abilities, and looking at other peoples’ work gives you an identity crisis because WOW people are so talented)

Process+Execution

Dimensions: The dimensions for the CREATIVE publication are the same as my favorite box of colour pencils, and the CRISIS book was an even square.

Page numbers: A unique system of page indicators, that moved away from the numerical system. 3D shapes used as page references.

Materials: Mixed papers of different weights, textures and transparencies, both for printing and as dividers + cover printed on heavy cardstock.

Binding: One line of single crochet and one line of double crochet using bright pink yarn.
